Grafted plants

pinea-branch

Carrying out a new stone pine plantation with a grafted plant is key, since it has a very significant influence on several aspects:

  • Precocity
  • Production
  • Fruit quality
  • Pruning and Training

And in turn, a grafted plant depends on:

  • Genotype used as variety
  • Rootstock
  • Graft
  • Nursery management

In our case, we take care of each one of these details, and with this we achieve that the projects carried out with our plants are an excellent and profitable agronomic alternative.

ADVANTAGE

The advantages of our grafted plants are given by the use of the trees that we select as scion donors, of known and evaluated genotypes, not only to comply with legal parameters, but also to not lose the genetic gain they offer.

GRAFTS

There are several types of graft, being the split or substitution of the terminal spike one of the best known and used by us. Other grafting methods exist, but success rates and subsequent plant development under real field conditions have generally been unsatisfactory.

NURSERY

The grafts are carried out in nurseries, because we have greater control over the plants, over the weather conditions and, in addition to being of lower cost, it allows us to produce a large number of plants of excellent quality.

STAFF

The skill of our grafters is a factor of great importance in the success of the grafts, since it depends on them that clean cuts are made in the shortest possible time, that the appropriate spikes are chosen, the choice of the moment to carry out the graft, that carry out an initial pruning appropriate to the conformation of each plant, and finally adjust the tape well to waterproof the union.

Thanks to the follow-up, monitoring and control programs developed over the years in Spain, a multitude of specimens have been evaluated and, among them, 15 specimens with superior characteristics have been selected and classified within the categories of Controlled and Qualified Material, which are the genotypes that we use in our nurseries for propagation by grafting and thus extend their cultivation. Plants grafted using genetic material from these selected clones improve the yield of our pines, and the profitability and precocity of the plantations carried out.

Genotypes

Rootstock

To obtain patterns we use seed from select stands classified as Selected Forest Reproduction Material, and after germination and development for two years, we only use those that show optimal development. The selection of healthy, vigorous rootstocks with a root system is an important factor that influences not only the initial success of the graft but also the development, vigour, size, flowering and productive behavior of the plant. The species that we use as rootstock to graft our stone pine clones are:

  • Pinus pinea
  • Pinus halepensis

From these species we take advantage of their versatility and adaptability to different environments and soil types, and their high graft compatibility, and depending on the area we choose the optimal rootstock for each plantation.
